Dieburg Campus
The Mediencampus for Beginners
Dear first-semester students,
A warm welcome to the Media Faculty at h_da! We are delighted to welcome you to the Media Campus.
We’ve put together a brief overview of the who, how, what and where
on this page.
More information on dates and introductory sessions:

Housing
Whether it’s a hall of residence, a shared flat or a private room: it’s highly recommended that you start looking early, as affordable accommodation for students is in short supply. You can live in Dieburg itself, in nearby Darmstadt or in the Rhine-Main region. With the semester pass, you can commute to the Mediencampus from the surrounding towns at no extra cost.
If you’re looking to live in flats or shared flats, we recommend using websites that specialise in finding accommodation
(e.g. WG Gesucht, immowelt.de, immoscout.de, kleinanzeigen.de, etc.)

Finance
Your study programme is free of charge, which means that the standard lectures, tutorials and supervised laboratory sessions are funded by the German government. The only costs you will have to cover are the semester fees, which include the following:
- A ticket for local public transport
- University sports programme
- Cultural programmes
You can find further details here.
Darmstadt is a large university town with tens of thousands of students, situated in the rural Rhine-Main region. The cost of living is correspondingly high. You will need an average of €950–1,200 per month.
This amount comprises:
- Health insurance (compulsory; you may still be covered through your family): approx. €85 per month
- Rent: approx. €350–600 per month
- Food: approx. €300 per month
- Miscellaneous: approx. €200 per month
At present, Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences does not offer the Germany Scholarship.
You can find information on other scholarships here, for example:
- myStipendium.de: a scholarship search engine with over 3,000 scholarship programmes,
- Stipendium Plus ( scholarship programmes run by the 13 state-funded organisations for the promotion of gifted students),
- The Career Advancement Scholarship for Experienced Professionals (federal funding for skilled workers with vocational training),
- German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD): Scholarships for international students, or
- ArbeiterKind.de: an organisation supporting university studies for children of non-academics.
Further information for students with refugee status can be found here.
The following organisations offer student jobs and work-study placements
Advice on balancing work and study is available from
The Federal Training Assistance Act (BAföG) provides financial support to help students complete their study programmes whilst covering their living costs. Student BAföG is generally awarded half as a grant and half as an interest-free loan. Detailed information is available from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the BAföG advisory service run by the Studierendenwerk.
At h_da, a student consultation service on the subject of BAföG is available. You can find all the information on the AStA website under the ‘AG Studienfinanzierung’ section.
For a whole range of reasons, students can sometimes find themselves short of money. That is why Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences has set up its own support association, which you can contact for assistance: https://foerderverein-fuer-in-not-geratene-studierende.de/.
Food & Catering
The canteen in Dieburg is located on the Media Campus and, during term time, offers a selection of hot meals (including vegetarian and vegan options), a salad and side-dish bar, as well as drinks, desserts and snacks – all at student-friendly prices.
You can find the opening hours and menus for the canteen in Dieburg here!
…is the place to meet on the Media Campus and is run with great care by AstA and students. The Zeitraum team looks forward to treating you to fresh coffee, cold drinks, fruit and small pastries.
For news about the café and exciting events, follow @cafezeitraum!
There is a Netto supermarket right next to the campus, and a 10-minute walk away (at the ‘Friedhof’ bus stop) there is an Edeka with a bakery and a salad bar. Right next to the campus, an organic fruit and vegetable shop offers a wide range of delicious produce, as well as freshly squeezed juices and so on.
If you’re in a real hurry, you can make use of the snack, soft drink and coffee vending machines on the campus grounds.
When times get tough: The Darmstadt Food Bank distributes food to those in need at 100 Bismarckstr. from 9 am to 1 pm. Tel. 06151/898289, latest news at https://www.darmstädtertafel.de/.
You can find further information on where to get help if even the bare essentials are too expensive in the ‘Finances’ section.
Community & Participation
You can find all the information about events here and by following @mediencampus.hda, @fachschaft_media and @cafezeitraum on Instagram.
Do you enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of a café and want to meet new people?
Then the Language Café is the perfect place for you! Over a drink, you’ll have the chance to:
- meet other students
- gain intercultural insights
- have a chat in German and other languages
All h_da students are very welcome – whether German is your mother tongue or you’re learning it as a foreign language.
The Discord server ‘Was mit Media’ is the digital version of our Café Zeitraum – with project rooms, chat corners and – of course – a room for cat pictures. The entry requirements are listed here.
All who’d like to join a music project or start one themselves should check out the Moodle course “Music@Dieburg”.
