“Blob the Klex” wins the German Computer Game Award
Game design students at h_da hochschule darmstadt have won the 2025 German Computer Game Award in the ‘Newcomer Award: Best Prototype’ category. The students from the Animation and Game study programme will receive prize money of 50,000 euros.
Melena Dressel, Laura Octavianus, Julian Papesch and Alejandro Rebolledo beat 70 other teams with their game “Blob the Klex”. The jury described the game as “a heart-warming platform adventure that captivates with its charming design, creative puzzles and a unique protagonist – the cat Klex.” The fluid controls allow players to “interact with Klex using behaviour typical of cats. In doing so, Klex explores an imaginative world stylistically inspired by the works of Studio Ghibli.” Particularly impressive is the level design, which is not only visually striking but also cleverly thought out in terms of gameplay mechanics. Blob the Klex proves that a well-thought-out concept, cohesive design and a charming protagonist are enough to create an all-round compelling gaming experience.” The full jury statement can be found here: https://deutscher-computerspielpreis.de/chronik/blob-the-klex/
The students were co-supervised by Prof. Stephan Jacob from the Animation and Game study programme at the h_da Media Campus in Dieburg: “The students deserve this award because they have put an extraordinary amount of creativity and hard work into the project. It is remarkable that they were only in their second semester of their Bachelor's degree when they developed the game, and to such a high standard. We are delighted that our application-oriented and practical study programme helps students to demonstrate their full potential.” The students now intend to use the prize money to further develop their prototype.
