Students from the SMP degree programme visit MSM Studios Berlin

On 19 June, 15 students from the Sound, Music and Production degree programme visited the renowned MSM Studios in Berlin. Stefan Bock, Managing Director of MSM Studios and a pioneer in immersive audio production, welcomed the group to the studios in Berlin-Kreuzberg.

The excursion focused on providing comprehensive insights into the production of immersive music formats, with particular emphasis on working with Dolby Atmos. Stefan Bock guided the students through the entire production process of modern immersive music projects – from the initial creative concept and technical implementation to the final mix.

In addition to creative and technical aspects, he also discussed the economic challenges and general conditions involved in running a professional recording studio. The combination of artistic work, technological innovation and entrepreneurial thinking gave the students a practical insight into the demands of the international music production industry.

During in-depth listening sessions, the participants experienced how contemporary music productions are created in a premium mixing studio and explored the sonic possibilities offered by Dolby Atmos. Particularly impressive was the demonstration of key dos and don’ts through carefully selected audio examples. This enabled the students to gain a detailed understanding of individual production steps, mixing decisions and the spatial design of the music.

The excursion offered the students a unique opportunity to connect theoretical course content with professional workflows and to engage directly with one of the world’s most experienced experts in immersive music production.
