HERMES - Humanities Education in Research, Data, and Methods

The collaborative project “Humanities Education in Research, Data, and Methods (HERMES)” provides training and advice in the humanities and cultural studies by creating spaces in which data literacy is taught, developed and critically examined. In addition, researchers and institutions are brought together to strengthen academic skills in the long term.

Project lead:Prof. Dr Stefan Schmunk
Project team:Dorothee Urbaum
Duration:November 2023 to November 2026
Funding body:
  • EU
  • Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR), grant reference: 16DKZ2009G

The collaborative project HERMES – Humanities Education in Research, Data, and Methods is dedicated to training and continuing education, as well as practical advice, in the field of data literacy within the humanities and cultural studies, and in the GLAM sector (galleries, libraries, archives, museums). The aim is to create spaces for learning, research and networking where data literacy is taught, developed and critically examined. HERMES is thus responding to the growing need for digital skills in research and teaching and is actively supporting the digital transformation in academia.

Project timeline

HERMES is a collaborative project funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (duration: 11/2023–11/2026). Nine universities, research institutions and memory institutions in Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate are working together on nine modular formats covering various aspects of data-related research – including data analysis, storage and dissemination, as well as ethics, law and data security.

Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences is responsible for two formats:

  • Open Educational Resources (OER): In cooperation with the Herder Institute for Historical Research on East Central Europe in Marburg, OER materials are being designed, structured and made available. The aim is to actively support teaching staff and researchers in the creation and use of open educational resources. A planned consultancy service will support researchers, teaching staff and students in the creation and use of OER. To ensure the service is tailored to the target groups, work has been carried out in cooperation with NFDI4memory a persona workshop was held; the personas developed are based on the centre’s ownOER publication. The initiative is also integrated into a network of data literacy centres that regularly shares synergies.
  • WissKomm Academy – HERMES Edition:
In collaboration with the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz, this programme teaches skills in digital science communication – for example in the areas of social media, training courses and podcast production. There will be additional opportunities offered by the end of 2026 through the existing programme of the ADW Mainz. The ‘HERMES-FDR’ podcast, which will be produced as an elective at h_da during the summer semester of 2025, provides a platform for HERMES projects and aims to develop new communication formats for NFDI consortia in the humanities.

Objective

HERMES aims to impart digital and data-related skills in a targeted manner within the specific contexts of the humanities and cultural studies. In doing so, the project focuses on subject-specific formats rather than generic research data management opportunities. Through the creation and dissemination of open educational resources, as well as through practice-oriented communication formats, the project aims to strengthen and network academic work in the long term. Key areas include promoting open access to knowledge (Open Access/OER) and the sustainable integration of digital methods into existing research practices.
