Motion Bank Piecemaker

The "Piecemaker" research project is developing an innovative software system for the digital recording, notation and archiving of dance as part of the Motion Bank initiative.

Project lead:Prof. Tsunemitsu Tanaka
Duration:January 2010 to December 2013
Funding body:
  • Federal Cultural Foundation
  • Hessian Ministry of Science and the Arts
  • Frankfurt-Rhine-Main Cultural Fund
  • Susanne Klatten

The research project aims to develop a software system – and make it available via Motion Bank – that can be used to record, notate and archive dance.
Piecemaker’s recording mode allows users to capture what happens during rehearsals. This includes adding rehearsal notes and annotating the rehearsal videos. In ‘Assembly’ mode, the software prototype can be used to assemble a dance piece by mapping events onto a multi-track timeline.
Piecemaker is to be developed into a standalone tool for the rehearsal room and a platform on which multiple people can enter information simultaneously via a network. The tool is aimed at dance practitioners and people working in dance education.
