Director’s Commentary
I think we’ve all been there: someone passes away, we offer our ‘sincere condolences’, and then an awkward silence falls. When my mother passed away in the summer of 2019, I found myself in this situation time and again. Most relatives and friends were at a loss. People either resorted to clichés or avoided the subject as much as possible.
Even within my own family, there are still awkward or strange moments. We’ve never really found the perfect way to deal with it. As I delved deeper into the subject of grief over time, I realised that many people feel the same way as I do. Instead of talking, we often remain silent.
In films, death is often touched upon only briefly. But there is usually only a ‘before’ and a ‘long after’ – almost never a ‘during’ or a ‘shortly after’. Rarely is ‘grief’ truly portrayed as a central theme. It’s strange: death and grief eventually affect us all. And yet, the subject remains a taboo.
