Music for silent films – a collaboration with the HfMDK Frankfurt

As part of a partnership between the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts and the Sound, Music and Production BA study programme at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, third-semester students are gaining valuable practical experience in music recording and production.

📅 3–4 November 2026

⏰ 7.30 pm

📍 Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts (HfmdK), small hall

During a series of silent film concerts, the students will be responsible for the professional recording of the film music performed live. In doing so, they will work intensively with acoustic instruments for the first time and learn how to capture different sound sources, ensembles and performance situations in a technically and musically convincing manner.

Over the course of the semester, the concert recordings are then edited and professionally mixed under realistic production conditions. Accompanying coaching sessions led by the lecturers help students to further develop their technical skills, make informed musical decisions and capture the unique atmosphere of the concerts in sound.

The collaboration with the HfMDK Frankfurt uniquely combines musical interpretation with modern audio production. At the same time, it enables students from both institutions to engage in an intensive professional exchange and gain fascinating insights into each other’s respective fields of work.
