2nd semester, 2025
Supervising lecturers: Andrea Krajewski, Torben Töpper, Dieter Stasch, Martin Haas, Tsune Tanaka & Tomas Zebis
Initial situation
During the second semester, we explored the topic of ‘DoLu’. This is a communal meal for students and lecturers on the IMD study programme, which takes place every Thursday during the lunch break. The dish to be served is decided in advance, so that each person can bring an ingredient. As part of our project, we took a closer look at sustainable food consumption.
Problem
Have you ever bought strawberries in winter? You know it’s not sustainable, yet they still end up in your shopping basket. How much of what you buy is locally produced and in season? How much of it ends up in the bin later on?
We often have a sustainable mindset and the desire to act sustainably. Yet all too often, we fail to translate this mindset into action. There’s a gap between our attitudes or intentions and our behaviour. We’ve been looking into how we can tackle this and support students in turning their sustainable attitudes into intuitive actions.
Solution
Our Greentopia service combines a web and mobile app to bring sustainability to life through shared meals and encourage the formation of new habits.
For students who want to adopt a more sustainable approach to food consumption in an intuitive way, Greentopia is a sustainability challenge system that helps them integrate simple goals into their daily lives, support one another and, in doing so, eat more sustainably.
Compared to other websites providing information on the ecological footprint, the system combines sustainable food consumption habits with fun and a sense of community. This makes it easier to integrate these habits into daily life in the long term, whilst requiring less effort.
Special features
What makes Greentopia special is that it encourages students to think sustainably and helps them adopt new habits in a fun and easy way. The effort and barriers involved in adopting a sustainable diet are reduced, and students have entry requirements for new knowledge. This fosters a sense of belonging and encourages mutual support.
Implementation
We developed the web application this term and created a user flow in Figma – which we then coded – so that you can experience the core of our service. We’ve put our ideas for the mobile app into a test version.
