Projects

Pandemics affect us all, but low-income earners are hit hardest. Could you manage to get by for a month?

A project by Victoria Bremer, Lynn Dunkel, Marina Hardt-Mitidieri and Phuong "Kitty" Quach
Second semester, 2020
Supervised by Prof. Andrea Krajewski, Garrit Schaap and Dieter Stasch

Problem

Many people who earn a good salary and belong to a higher social class lack awareness. They lack an awareness of social justice.

Single people and families in socio-economically disadvantaged groups are struggling during a pandemic. They are losing their jobs or seeing their wages cut, and are having to go without many things.

Nevertheless, they are able to face the pandemic with composure, as they have the option of switching to working from home or have substantial savings. That’s easy as long as you earn enough. It’s hard to put yourself in the shoes of another person, especially when you’re in a different life situation.

Idea

This is where our simulation comes in. VINDU offers an insight into the lives of people living in poverty.

It puts players in the shoes of other people. They have to make decisions about how they would behave in certain situations. In doing so, they must always bear in mind that they are in a different life situation. They do not earn a net income of 2,500, have no savings and sometimes
they are faced with questions they would not normally have to ask themselves in real life.
