Melómano – Twist Your Sound

Projects

A wireless MIDI controller that can be operated with just one hand.

A study project by José David Cárdenas and Santiago Jaramillo, 3rd semester, 2020
Supervising lecturers: Prof. Dr Kyrill Fischer, Prof. Thorsten Greiner, Prof. Dr Jürgen Schwab

The concept stems from a situation familiar to singers: the scope for expression in live performances is often limited because it is usually not possible to hold a microphone and operate a MIDI controller at the same time.

MIDI controllers also often consist of heavy keyboards and buttons, and data is usually transmitted via cables and wires. All these factors can hinder the creative process, particularly when artists are performing live.

The Melómano has neither keys nor buttons. It consists of a transmitter module, which contains a gyroscope sensor to measure hand movements, and a receiver module, which is connected to a computer to read the data.

The aim was to enable wireless operation. That is why communication between the modules takes place via radio waves.
