MIDINMIND

Projects

MIDINMIND is a MIDI controller developed in the interactive workshop of the study programme

"Sound, Music and Production BA" at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences.

A study project by Sophie Hiller, Esther Wilka and Karam Akkil, 3rd semester, 2021
Supervising lecturers: Prof. Dr Kyrill Fischer and Prof. Thorsten Greiner; Supervising tutors: Matthias Hassel and Fritz Krüger

MIDINMIND is a MIDI controller that allows you to control MIDI data in various ways using a Teensy. Thanks to MIDI Learn, all control elements can be programmed individually with the greatest of ease. True to the motto: “Control Your Controller.”

This add-on will delight a DJ in their live setup just as much as a music producer in their studio. It connects to the computer via a standard USB port. Four 10-centimetre faders, along with drum pads, five potentiometers and eight buttons, provide familiar tools for editing. At the heart of the system, however, is the 2.8-inch touchscreen, which allows simultaneous control of two parameters via an X/Y pad.

The MAX/MSP patch developed here is perfect for trying out. It contains three sound modules – namely Lead, Bass and Rhythm – whose basic sound can be manipulated using different waveforms or a sequencer. Further customisation options are available via a switchable low-pass/high-pass filter, an equaliser and reverb. A dedicated sample pack featuring tape sounds has been created for use with the drum pads.

It can, of course, also be used with any DAW. An initial template pack for Ableton Live, REAPER and FL Studio is included, which configures the controller by default – plug and play!

The hardware is available in two versions: Tape (saturates the MIDI data) and Metal (distorts the MIDI data non-linearly).

When assembling something, it’s always important to keep an overview of everything.
A housing is a neat way to conceal the tangle of cables.

The MAX/MSP patch follows this signal chain: lead, bass and rhythm → sequencer → low-pass/high-pass filter → reverb → equaliser → panning + drum pads
