Draw Your Sound! The Modulo4 is a digital synthesiser that allows you to draw waveforms on a touchscreen and use them as the basis for synthesising surprising sound sequences. The drawn waveforms can be sequenced across up to 8 steps and then processed to shape the sound. Thanks to its unconventional yet intuitive interface, the Modulo4 lets you quickly create complex and original sounds in a playful way.
Shape Your Sound! The Modulo4 features 8 mysterious controls that bring the drawn waveforms to life in the blink of an eye. Labels have been deliberately omitted to encourage an experimental creative process. This means that users can be surprised by unpredictable sounds even as they explore the individual functions.
Technical implementation
The Modulo4 operates entirely without a computer and can be connected directly to a sound system or a portable loudspeaker. A Teensy microcontroller is used to control the display, audio synthesis and the sequencer section simultaneously. When users draw a wave on the screen, the microcontroller saves it as a wave function, which is then played back as sound by the integrated Audio Shield. Using eight adjustable resistors, users can set various parameters, such as attack, decay, pitch, etc., to shape the final sound.
