Mutation

Video & Sound: Felix Baltes, 6th semester, 2020
Supervising lecturers: Prof. Bergfeld, Prof. Fischer, Prof. Kümmel, Prof. Krückels
The listener bears witness to a multidimensional process of mutation. Different animal species encounter one another in an artificial space and merge to form something new – classic animation meets video synthesis. The space itself is not left unaffected by this process either. It mutates from medium to narrative and back again, until, in the end, no clear distinction can be made between the two. The aim is to draw the viewer into a fictional world and, not without moments of disorientation, to allow them to participate in this process of blending.
On an auditory level, too, a surreal environment is created that makes the listener feel uneasy. The aim is not a realistic reproduction, but immersion in a world the listener has never experienced before. In addition to a ‘surround reverb plate’, which serves as a ‘space’ for the underwater world, all animal sounds were generated using FM synthesis or imitated with the human voice and subsequently distorted.
