“Pure Nature”: an immersive VR experience on climate change
“Pure Nature” offers an immersive, guided VR exhibition
on the subject of climate change.
A study project on the interactive workshop by Daniel Pohl, Lukas Schimmelpfennig and Mirjam Brög, 4th semester, 2021
Supervising lecturers: Owi Mahn, Michael Rieker
With the help of VR technology, visitors are introduced to four different climate zones and the changes expected in each as a result of global warming.
The user embarks on a journey with their companion, the tortoise ‘Gaia’. In the various scenes – ‘Forest’, ‘Arctic’, ‘Sea’ and ‘Jungle’ – the consequences for the respective ecosystems are visually illustrated, whilst Gaia explains the human behaviour responsible for them.
In a personally engaging way, users are encouraged to reflect on their own actions and how they treat the planet, whilst the tour is supported musically within the narrative structure and various sounds have been optimised for the user’s real-world spatial hearing.
The project serves to raise awareness and appeal to reason, urging us to save our planet, Earth, from destruction caused by our own reckless behaviour.
