Assignment for the ‘Workshop: Interactive’ module in the fourth semester of the Sound, Music and Production BA study programme.
Team members: Gustav Haese, Jonas Hausotter, Amine Hayati, 4th semester, 2020 Supervising lecturer: Prof. Thorsten Greiner
Our Project XX was inspired by the works of Hans Thoma, ‘Self-Portrait in front of a Birch Forest’ (1899), and Richard Oelze, ‘Archaic Fragment’ (1935).
The setting of our soundscape is a forest, which is brought to life by the sound objects (forest animals). By using these familiar sounds, we can build upon a foundation that can now be deconstructed.
To achieve this, we have implemented various classic audio effects in Max/MSP and applied them to Ambisonics. Among the effects are a delay, a reverb, a resonator, a frequency splitter and also an old favourite from the third semester at Wholegrain (the granular synthesis effect).
As light was also a key theme in our sources of inspiration, we set about developing a particle system using the capabilities of Jitter (Max/MSP).
This particle system visually represents the auditory evolution of our soundscape. It transforms alongside the sounds and objects as a coherent system, only to return again and again to its origin – if indeed there is one.
We would like to warmly invite you to take a ‘look’ at our soundscape and form your own impression.
We hope you enjoy it: Gustav Haese, Jonas Hausotter and Amine Hayati
