Uncertain Prospects

Video & Sound: Lukas Esser & Mark Buschmann, 6th semester, 2020
Prof. Dr Kyrill Alexander Fischer, Prof. Moritz Bergfeld, Prof. Carsten Kümmel, Prof. Felix Krückels

The content shown in the video attempts to portray reality in all its complexity and subjectivity. It is intended to depict distortions of reality.

TEXT
The texts shown are part of Ludwig Wittgenstein’s ‘Tractatus logico-philosophicus’. Sections 2.1–2.225 describe the subjectivity of reality as an image that we create for ourselves.

BIFURCATION
The Feigenbaum diagram shown is derived from the logistic equation. The equation is an example of how complex, chaotic behaviour can arise from simple non-linear equations.

LATENT SPACE
Here, content generated by a network is juxtaposed with ‘real’ content. The viewer is confronted with the question of whether the faces that appear are real, or have been generated on the basis of original images.
What is shown is a random walk through the latent space of a Style-GAN network. This was trained using portraits by the Romanian photographer Costica Acsinte.

The Latent Space Walk was generated using runwayML and p5.js, whilst all other content was created using Processing. The resulting frames were arranged and rendered into a video using ffmpeg.

We recommend watching the video with headphones, as the audio track has been mixed binaurally to ensure the best possible listening experience.
