Expanded Media

Important Notice

The deadline for submitting applications for the winter semester is: Applications for the summer semester must be submitted by:
International applicants: 1 June
German applicants: 1 August
International applicants: 1 December
German applicants: 1 February

Requirements

The entry requirement for the Master's programme is a completed Diploma or Bachelor's degree in the field of digital media. Candidates from related fields (e.g. media design, computer science, media management, media studies) have a good chance of being accepted – but they should have practical experience in media production.

An English language certificate at level B2 in accordance with the ‘Common European Framework of Reference for Languages’ of the Council of Europe, or an equivalent, is required (e.g. an IELTS certificate with an overall band score of 5.5 or higher, TOEFL B2, TOEFL IBT at Home Edition, TOEIC B2, Cambridge Certificate B2 FCE). This requirement does not apply to native speakers from the United States and Great Britain.

If the applicant’s previous Bachelor's degree was completed with only 180 ECTS, an internship must be completed during the course.

Entrance examination

Applicants must pass an entrance examination, which takes into account their final Bachelor’s degree mark, the relevance of their previous studies, practical experience, a statement of motivation, an outline of their field of study and examples of their work. The entrance examination is based on the documents you submit. These documents can be submitted via a link.

The following documents must be submitted:

  1. Final certificate of your previous Bachelor's or Diploma degree (or, alternatively, a provisional certificate if your current course of study has not yet been completed)
  2. Detailed curriculum vitae
  3. Statement of motivation (personal statement) in video format, explaining your personal interest in this Master’s programme and your chosen specialisation (max. 3 minutes in length)
  4. Portfolio containing 4 examples of your work (PDF; please include links to videos uploaded to YouTube or Vimeo)
  5. If available: Proof of practical experience (work certificates, letters of recommendation)
  6. Proposal for a media-based research project in your chosen specialisation:

Please outline an idea for a time-travel experience that will transport participants to a historical time and location of your choice.

  • The aim is to design a multi-sensory, narrative-driven environment that deeply engages participants and leaves a lasting impression, focusing on the historical setting rather than the mechanics of time travel.
  • Create a spatial experience that can take place in a physical, digital or hybrid setting.
  • Structure the experience across multiple scenes or stations that explore different aspects of your chosen historical period.
  • Use a combination of media formats (e.g. sound, video, projection, augmented/virtual reality, installation, performance, web-based components, etc.) to create a cohesive and emotionally resonant experience.
  • Design for participant interaction through role-play, decision-making, or engagement with NPCs (non-playable characters) and/or other visitors.

The tone of the project is up to you – it may be documentary, poetic, playful, dystopian, hopeful or activist in nature. You are encouraged to challenge conventional exhibition formats and explore emerging media practices.

Focus on creating an experience that is memorable, immersive and emotionally powerful.
