Humour and satire as a means of conveying journalistic content

Humour and satire as a means of conveying journalistic content – the theme of Teaching Editorial Workshop III in the Summer Semester 2024, including a stage show...
What is it all about?

Humour and satire can be effective ways of conveying journalistic content – from commentary on politics and society to the findings of complex investigations. In the teaching editorial workshop, we examined this topic from both a theoretical and a practical perspective.

Methodology

We interviewed people whose work involves satire – whether on stage, in editorial roles or in event organisation (some of these interviews can be read on Ach_DAsta). We were joined by Nicole Nieland from ZDF’s Comedy and Cabaret editorial team and Julia Mateus, editor-in-chief of *Titanic*. At the Unterhaus in Mainz, we were able to speak to the actor Alexander Schubert before and after a cabaret show. And we developed and tested our own ideas for satirical formats.

Outcome of the project

At the end of the term, we put on a stage show at Café Zeitraum: a good hour of comedy and satire on topics such as nationalism, media criticism and gender-neutral language.
