Introduction to the project
The project explores migration and the question: Where do people come from – and where are they heading? It focuses on personal perspectives on displacement, identity, belonging and racism. The aim was to highlight the experiences of people with a refugee background – moving beyond statistics and clichés. The motivation behind the project was also partly personal: many of the contributions are based on family stories or conversations within the authors’ own circles.
Implementation
We developed the topics in a plenary session – focusing on social relevance and personal perspectives. Many drew on their own experiences or those of their families. The work was presented in a variety of journalistic formats – including interviews, feature articles and profiles. Everyone wrote independently, whilst there were regular discussions and feedback sessions within the group.
Outcome of the project
The results include, amongst other things, an interview with an eyewitness about fascism then and now, a feature on the second generation in Germany, and a piece on the generation of guest workers from the Balkans. We learnt how important it is to listen carefully – and just how complex migration is when you look at it up close.
