Student newspaper ‘Lautschrift’
What’s it all about?
Resistance is a key political concept with many facets. What forms of resistance are legitimate or even necessary, and which are justified? How have resistance movements contributed to social progress throughout history?
This semester, the student editorial team focused on the overarching theme of ‘resistance’. Through a wide variety of texts and creative formats, the students explored how resistance manifests itself in society in diverse ways and where it occurs. The final product was an 84-page student newspaper, published in both print and digital formats as an e-paper. The different publication formats meant that the students had to exercise a high degree of diligence.

Implementation:
First of all, the course had to be divided into the various editorial departments: text editing, picture editing, the website team, graphic design and the editorial board. Initial ideas for topics were then discussed and the framework for the course established. The aim was to produce a print article and an online article by the end of the course, as well as to deliver a presentation on the topic of ‘resistance’ as part of the course, in order to gain a better understanding of the subject. The students then moved on to the initial research phase and presented the topics they had developed at the editorial meeting. At these meetings, which were held weekly at the start of the course, the daily workload was assigned and tasks were distributed. As the course progressed, the articles were then produced independently and prepared by the various editorial departments for their respective publication channels. In addition to writing the texts, a significant part of the work involved the design and preparation of the texts for the print publication.
Outcome of the project:
The project focused on producing the print publication “Lautschrift”, which can be viewed as an e-paper on the website. In addition, separate articles were produced for the website, which were published online only. Examples of these include: ‘How Belarusians in exile are resisting Lukashenko’ (lautschrift-mag.wixsite.com) and ‘A cross in defiance, the swastika hidden’ (lautschrift-mag.wixsite.com). The most important lessons learnt from the project were probably the importance of meeting deadlines for text submission, editing and design, as these were always linked to the magazine’s final print deadline or the website’s launch date.
