What’s it all about?
Travelling is something most people enjoy doing, but it’s best to be well-informed about it. Whether it’s a gap year, volunteering on the other side of the world, or travelling through Asia with a rucksack or a suitcase, it’s always good to know what to expect beforehand. And:
- Are there actually ways to go on holiday and earn money at the same time?
- As a woman, should I even travel alone?
- What has it been like for people who’ve lived with a host family for a year or had to rely on Google Translate?
If these are the sort of questions on our minds, then surely others are thinking the same. We want to inspire and enthuse young adults about travelling, and help them discover new ways of travelling and new countries. The world is just a train journey or a flight away.
Implementation
Our project is aimed particularly at young people who are taking a break during or after school, vocational training or a study programme to discover the world. Learning from the experiences of others is a tried-and-tested method, which is why we have focused primarily on personal accounts. After choosing our subject area, we identified key areas of focus and, whilst working on the individual articles, discussed our progress and any issues on a weekly basis.
Outcome of the project
Univenture offers a glimpse into the travel experiences of young people; we spoke to a youth travel co-ordinator, a woman who did voluntary service in The Gambia, and a student who spent a semester in South Korea. Whether it was during research or planning, we realised over the course of the semester just how important it is, above all, to coordinate and communicate openly.
